I decided to edit the Rockland County Wikitravel page. Before editing the page, it had little to no information and the content was extremely broad. Being that I was born and raised in the county, I felt I was qualified to change some aspect of the site.

Here is a screenshot of the top of the page before editing:

Not only is there a lack of information but the category Cities has incorrect information. Why have a subhead of Regions but have nothing listed underneath? These are just some problems that I noticed prior editing.

Besides the top of the page, I also added more information in all the other categories such as Eat, Drink, Do, and See. Shown Below

Post Hoc:

The Wikitravel assignment was an interesting concept. I had never done a similar assignment so I was excited to try something new. I chose Rockland County for a couple reasons.  First being I am from Suffern which is a town in Rockland. In classes leading up to choosing a page, I looked at Rockland’s page. It was missing a lot of important information as well as having some incorrect details. My approach of editing the page began with researching exact details. I proceeded to start writing new tabs and adding information under existing tabs. I wrote everything on Word Processor so I could edit and add additional information along the way. When I felt ready to post it on the page the website gave me a lot of difficulties. It was extremely hard to navigate the website. When adding text the symbols to change font, bullet, or hyperlink were very confusing. This led to the process of actually posting the information to be long and time consuming. I then struggled with figuring out how to put pictures, a header or diagrams on the blog. This step was also extremely confusing and time consuming.

After finally having a finished product I checked the website a few hours later and everything was deleted. Someone else went on the blog and removed everything I wrote and some information that was previously there. This was the most aggravating part of the whole assignment. You would think for such a consumer and public friendly website it would be easier to navigate. If all my hard work can be deleted in seconds just because someone else disagrees with it then why is it not easier to post the information? In the end, I think the idea of the assignment is clever and different. However Wikitravel’s web design, layout and way of business make it hard for students and unexperienced individuals to complete the project happily. In the future Id recommend changing the assignment and maybe making the project for a different website.
